Film Screening: Peasants
The film is based on Polish Nobel Prize winner Wladyslaw Reymont's novel ‘The Peasants’. The Welchmans, the couple behind the film, created this fascinating masterpiece of love, lust and revenge by animating over 40,000 oil paintings created by 125 painters.
Set in a small Polish village at the end of the 19th century, young woman Jagna is determined to shape her own life. But the village is a cauldron of gossip, ongoing conflicts, rigid traditions and deep-rooted patriarchal norms.
Jagna is forced to marry the village's old but very wealthy farmer and to conform to tradition, because in the words of Jagna's mother: ‘Land will endure and love will perish’.
